I hope you're ready to change your entire lifestyle! After reading this post, you will have more ideas for making money than you know what to do with, but the secret in all of it is to TAKE ACTION. Don't wait until you have the perfect plan in place. Just do it! If I would have waited until I felt like I had the time or the money or the mental space to invest in these projects, I never would have done it.
Being a physical therapist, I have always struggled with feeling very divided; I want to be at home educating my children and not farming that out to other people, but at the same time I needed to work a good amount of the week in order to sustain us financially. When I tapped into a variety of these means of making money from home, it was life-changing for us and now I only work one day a week outside the home (mostly for my sanity because, you know…kids)!
I'll guide you through some of the pivotal strategies I've used to design a work and family balance, and how you can make a big contribution to the family income (if not SUSTAIN your family financially!), all while staying at home and pouring the vast majority of your energy where it belongs–your family!
How Do I Actually Make Money While Homeschooling?
Maybe you're like me and have taken a handful of courses about starting a blog or a small business or any kind of venture (hopefully not an MLM lol!), and you still feel like you're stuck in the same old place without a dime to show for all of your efforts. I've sunk my fair share of money into various courses and mini-ventures, doing things the wrong way over and over again.
What I've learned is that it's easy to work harder, but a lot more difficult to work smarter. Because at the end of the day, you ideally don't want to be just trading one job for another. You want to strategically choose the right ventures that work for your setup with your children's ages, and then structure your business systems to operate on autopilot and bring more passive income.
Spoiler alert though: this will require a lot more hustle up front and lots of investing without any fruit for quite awhile before you see any results. But trust the process and you'll see your income increase while the time required of you decreases, ultimately leaving more time for educating your precious kiddos!
1. Glowforge Business: Crafting Success at Home
What is a Glowforge?
Glowforge is a top-of-the-line laser engraving printer, suitable for engraving, cutting, and scoring a wide array of materials. From wood, acrylic, leather, paper, and foam, to objects as obscure as marshmallows and macarons, you can personalize creations with custom monograms, quotes, and drawings, along with carving out 3-dimensional designs.
I won't lie to you. This is a hefty investment. But an investment it is, because you will make all of your money back and more in a heartbeat!
When you invest in a Glowforge you can:
- Create a bustling Glowforge business by making personalized and customized creations.
- Craft intricate designs (pre-made or made-by-you) and turn your creativity into a profitable venture.
- Unleash your artistic flair while contributing to your family's income.
Without even setting up an Etsy or Shopify storefront, I just posted to my Facebook some low-quality pics of a few little designs I made engraving quotes on wood plaques, and within the hour I had over $300 worth of orders. Mind you, the materials cost for those orders was less than $20, so we're talking about some real returns on your investment, here.
It's also a great return on your time. You simply upload your design file from your computer or the Glowforge app (I'm not tech-savvy at all so I just use Canva or purchase files for a few bucks), place your material in the printer, and then hit the button to start. Then it does the work for you!
This is not a very hands-off method of making money (unless you get into creating svg design files for other Glowforgers to purchase from you); you do have to get the product made, advertise/list it/ship it, etc. BUT if you are serious about hustling to make a good income and doing it from your own home, then this could be the gig for you! Something I love about this too is that I can involve my kids in the process, and they can see directly the hard work and the process of crafting something beautiful and turning it for a profit to benefit our family. They feel proud when they are a part of it!
You can save a TON whenever you purchase through my Glowforge Link: get a $50 gift card when you purchase Glowforge Aura, $250 off when you buy a Plus, and $500 off when you buy a Glowforge Pro. They even have options for 0% financing, making it pretty much a no brainer whenever you consider how quickly the orders will be rolling in.
2. Etsy Entrepreneurship: Turning Passion into Profit
If you've been living under a rock and don't know, Etsy is an online platform where you can sell handmade items, vintage finds, or craft supplies. One of the great things about Etsy is you can keep your own identity and brand as your own shop, and you have the flexibility to sell whatever kinds of products you desire. So, whether that be a booming Glowforge business, a homeschool supply shop, or a digital/printables shop, the sky is the limit.
With an Etsy shop, you can make money homeschooling by:
- Setting up your own business and showcase handmade or vintage items.
- Learning the ropes of effective product listings, photography, and customer engagement (all of which also happen to be marketable skills if you're looking for other income streams!).
- Transforming your hobbies into a sustainable income stream, and allowing opportunities for your kids to get involved too.
If you are for real about setting up a booming Etsy business, this course on “Building Your Digital Etsy Empire” is phenomenal and I have personally taken it and can attest to the value that it is. If you are a member of their membership program (it's only $7 a month), the course is only $27 instead of $127 so I highly recommend becoming a PIPs Lite member! More on this next.
Random pro tip: did you know you can buy mockup templates on Creative Fabrica? Depending on your product, you may not even have to mess with photographing creations yourself!
ACTION STEP: Check out Creative Fabrica and see what inspiration you can glean! They have promotions where you can access their entire library of products for only $1 for a certain period of time.
3. Blogging Brilliance: Share Your Homeschooling Journey
Okay guys, I'm going to be real here. I have started 5 different blogs in my lifetime, and all of them prior to this have been a complete flop. I was so directionless and had no idea how I could actually monetize it. I equated traffic with income (which is definitely not necessarily the case!), thinking that I had to have a bazillion ads and visitors on my site in order to make any money. NOT TRUE.
Sadie Smiley has the greatest course of all time with her PIPs Approach (Passive Income Pathways) to making money online. I HIGHLY recommend enrolling in her ultra-low cost membership (a whopping $7), because it gives you access to an entire library of courses. From “Building Your Digital Etsy Empire” to the “1K in 10 Days Challenge” course, this affordable program will seriously be all you need to actually start seeing the cash rolling in. A PIPs Membership will guide you step-by-step as you:
- Dive into the world of blogging, which you can do with any topic you are knowledgeable about (aka sharing your unique homeschooling experiences!).
- Show you how to choose a niche that you can excel in at blogging
- Learn SEO strategies to boost visibility and attract a broader audience.
- Monetize your blog through affiliate marketing and sponsored content.
- Learn how you can use AI to reduce your time invested in “Lighting Fast Content Creation”
With some strategic planning, affiliate marketing is going to be your BFF when it comes to actually making any kind of income. With affiliate marketing, you get out what you put in. PIPs is based around this type of income when it comes to blogging, as it is more of a set it up and let it ride kind of way to earn.
At the risk of overdoing it, I just want to say again that I cannot recommend Sadie's courses highly enough! Don't spend another dime on blogging workshops because all you'll ever need you can find here. This is seriously one of the best ways that you can make money while homeschooling your kids.
Through PIPs, I have gotten exponentially greater viewership for my blog with only a fraction of the time invested. It's a phenomenal return on your time and money and will let you successfully make money while homeschooling.
ACTION STEP: Look into the PIPs membership and see what they offer
4. Homesteading for Income: Sustainable Living, Sustainable Earnings
Do you already raise animals or grow a big garden? Maybe you've just dreamed of it? I know I have. And though I've not personally done this approach, there are countless homeschooling families that marry together the work of a farm or homestead with the concepts they are teaching in their homeschool. This can be a seamless way of integrating real life with your child's education.
In starting a homestead, you can:
- Embrace the homesteading lifestyle and turn it into a profitable venture.
- Sell organic produce, homemade products, or even offer workshops on self-sustainability.
- Cultivate a business that aligns with your homeschooling values.
Something else extremely valuable is that you are saving so many costs on top of the money you make through selling your produce, animals, etc., furthering the impact. It doesn't get better than growing your own food!
For more on this topic, The Homestead Education is a wonderful resource. They have an awesome Homestead Science Curriculum that uses concepts seen in nature and in the world of raising livestock and works those into tangible lessons.
Also, grab be sure and grab their free guide now on “Homestead Money Makers” so you'll know from the start where to focus your efforts for maximum profitability.
5. Podcasting: Amplify Your Voice and Your Income
Podcasting is a great way to make money while homeschooling! I've done a bit of podcasting myself via The Dr. Nurture Podcast, and in doing this I've learned a few tips and tricks. One of the first things you'll need to do is decide on a topic that is near and dear to your heart, that you feel you could ramble about until the end of time.
I'm a physical therapist by trade, so for me that was child development. It was a perfect topic for me because the things I could say were absolutely endless! Do some brainstorming and find what that thing is for you.
You may even want to do some keyword research to see what people are searching and see how you can make that align with your expertise. Keysearch is great for this, and on top of their low-price, you can get a 20% discount with code KSDISC. I would not recommend this if I didn't think it was a game-changer in my own journey!! I was clueless on SEO and Keysearch was just what I needed to get me ranking high in the Google searches so people like you can actually find my posts!
Transistor is a great and easy to navigate platform you can use to host your podcast, where they will then distribute it out to all of the other podcast hosting platforms.
If you want to get into the world of audio content creation to make money while homeschooling:
- Start a podcast to share your insights and connect with a wider audience.
- Monetize through sponsorships, affiliate marketing, and listener support.
- Transform your spoken words into a source of inspiration and income.
Something I really like about Transistor is that you can host multiple podcasts on a single account and you don't have to pay any extra. Another differentiating feature is that you can auto-post your episodes to YouTube. On my podcast I use Spotify but I won't lie to you, I am not the biggest fan and one of these days I will get around to making the switch!
When it comes to monetizing a podcast, you really need to have a good handle on affiliate marketing. This affiliate marketing course is the best of the best. It's comprehensive and will give you all the info and tools you need to make money while homeschooling.
6. Freelance Writing Freedom: Turning Words into Wealth
You can also make money while homeschooling by turning your writings into cash. This field has been flooded with new opportunity in the past several years; it seems now that employers prefer people who can work from home. If you just Google “freelance writing gigs,” you will be shocked at the variety of job offers that come up!
When you take the next steps to start freelance writing, you:
- Venture into the world of finding your own voice and offer your skills to various platforms.
- Establish a solid portfolio and attract clients seeking your expertise.
- Balance the flexibility of freelance work with your homeschooling commitments.
I would recommend putting together a portfolio of your writings in preparation for showing potential employers your work. If you've done any blogging in the past or written articles, this is great material to show off your skills.
Here are some resources for different types of freelance writing jobs for homeschool moms:
Book Review Blogging– This blogger has some great ways to get you going with starting a book review blog specifically.
Verblio– This is an online platform where you can find freelance jobs. They offer tremendous flexibility, which is everything when you're a homeschooling mama!
7. Online Course Creation: Educate and Earn Simultaneously
If you have a topic that you are an expert in or at least feel like you have lots and lots of good stuff to say about, then you should definitely look into the world of online course creation.
By creating tutorials and modules for others to purchase, you can:
- Share your expertise by creating online courses related to homeschooling or a specific skill.
- Utilize platforms like Teachable or Udemy to host and sell your courses.
- Empower others while building a passive income stream.
Once you just get started with creating an outline for a course, you will be surprised at how much you actually have to say about a topic.
ACTION STEP: Draft a brainstorm page about a topic of interest and expertise, and see how much info you can come up with as a foundation for a course.
8. Digital Printables: Designing Success on Autopilot
Printables can be a great way to make money while homeschooling, as this can be set up initially so that you can turn it into a hands-off shop. To help you passively make money while homeschooling, you can:
- Create digital printables such as planners, worksheets, svg files for Glowforge, or educational materials.
- Utilize platforms like Etsy or your blog to ultimately sell these products passively.
- Monetize your creativity while contributing to the homeschooling community.
Creative Fabrica is the go-to place for clip art (yes, people sell clipart on Etsy), while Planify is the ultimate choice if you want to make planners to sell. And of course Canva is the choice for getting the basics done if you are not very tech smart (aka me!).
Again, PIPs has the ULTIMATE course on literally everything you need to know to successfully start and sustain a digital printables business so you can easily make money while homeschooling. Just look at all the valuable modules this course includes:
- Selling Digital Products Without a Shop
- How to Write Awesome Non-Sleazy Sales Copy
- The Art of Flat Lay Photography
- Building a brand by Leveraging media
- Creating Printables with Easy DFY Sets

- Why Bloggers Should Start a TpT Shop (and Why They Shouldn't)
- How AI can enhance your current PLR Library
- $20 FREE PLR- You Pick what you want!
- 110 Digital Ideas
9.) Open Your Own PLR Shop For Passive Income
Make money while homeschooling by front-loading some serious hustle, and then watch your earnings grow. Similar to freelance writing and selling printables, PLR is Private Label Rights content, which is where you write articles and then sell them with all of the rights for others to use them completely as their own. So you're not posting them anywhere, you're creating and selling them to completely relinquish all credit to them.
Bloggers, businesses, and countless others are in the time-saving market of purchasing PLR. It makes a great avenue of passive income for YOU because you can set up your listing for content and then the sales portion is on autopilot.
The BEST and EASIEST way to make a booming PLR business is by taking this course, “Open a PLR Store.”
#1 Takeaway: TAKE ACTION
Balancing homeschooling and a successful home-based business is not only possible but empowering. Whether you're crafting with a Glowforge, selling on Etsy, or sharing your journey through a blog or podcast, there are endless avenues to explore. Whatever you choose, it's important that you take action and get the process started so that you can make money while homeschooling! Choose the path that aligns with your passions, skills, and the homeschooling lifestyle you envision.
